(The Sun: Structure and Importance)
(Introduction)
(Chemical Composition)
हाइड्रोजन (Hydrogen): लगभग 71% to 73%
हीलियम (Helium): लगभग 25% to 27%
(Structure of the Sun)
Introduction
The Sun is a medium-sized star (G-type main-sequence star) located at the center of the Solar System. It is the primary energy source for life on Earth and all geographic processes (such as climate, weather, the water cycle, and the wind system). The study of the Sun is crucial to physical geography and climatology because solar radiation received at the surface drives Earth's atmosphere and hydrosphere.
Chemical Composition of the Sun
The Sun is composed primarily of plasma (extremely hot ionized gas):
Hydrogen: approximately 71% to 73%
Helium: approximately 25% to 27%
Other heavier elements: approximately 1.5% to 2% (oxygen, carbon, neon, iron, etc.)
Structure of the Sun
The Sun's structure is divided into two main parts: the internal structure and the atmospheric atmosphere.
(Internal Structure)
(Radiative Zone):
(Convective Zone):
(Solar Atmosphere)
(Photosphere):
(Chromosphere):
(Corona):
(Importance in Physical Geography)
(Insolation & Heat Budget):
(Drivers of Weather & Climate):
(Hydrological Cycle):
(Biosphere & Photosynthesis):
(Weathering & Geomorphic Processes):
1. Internal Structure
The Core:
This is the Sun's centralmost region, encompassing approximately 20–25% of its total radius.
The temperature here is approximately 15 million degrees Celsius (1.5 times 107 °C) and the pressure is extremely high.
Nuclear Fusion: Under high pressure and temperature in the core, four hydrogen nuclei fuse to form a helium nucleus, releasing a tremendous amount of energy.
The Radiative Zone:
This is the intermediate layer outside the core.
Photons (energy) produced in the core travel through this layer. Energy is transferred through radiation.
Energy takes thousands of years to travel through this layer.
Convective Zone:
This is the outermost layer of the Sun's internal structure.
Energy is transferred here through convective currents—hot plasma rises upward and cold plasma sinks.
2. Solar Atmosphere
Photosphere:
This is the visible surface of the Sun that we see from Earth.
Its temperature is approximately 5500 °C to 6000 °C.
Sunspots: Relatively dark/cool spots visible on the photosphere, with temperatures up to 1500 °C lower than the surrounding surface.
Chromosphere:
It is a thin, reddish layer found just above the photosphere.
It is usually only clearly visible during a total solar eclipse.
The temperature here ranges from approximately 6000 circ C to 20,000 circ C.
Corona:
This is the outermost and largest region of the Sun's atmosphere.
It appears as a crown or halo only during a total solar eclipse.
The temperature here is extremely high (1 to 3 million degrees Celsius). Highly energetic particles flow from here, creating the solar wind.
Importance of the Sun in Physical Geography
From the perspective of physical geography, the importance of the Sun on Earth is as follows:
Solar Radiation and Heat Budget:
Shortwave solar radiation received by Earth provides heat to the Earth's surface, maintaining a habitable average temperature.
Drivers of Weather and Climate:
Due to the Earth's tilt and shape, the Sun's rays fall unevenly at different latitudes. This thermal difference creates air pressure belts and drives wind systems and cyclones.
The Basis of the Hydrological Cycle:
The sun's heat drives the evaporation of water from oceans and water bodies, leading to condensation, cloud formation, and precipitation.
Biosphere & Photosynthesis:
Plants use sunlight to produce primary food through photosynthesis, which is the basis of the entire food chain.
Weathering & Geomorphic Processes:
Thermal expansion and contraction causes physical weathering of rocks, which contributes to soil formation (pedogenesis) and changes in landforms.
