Topic: Interior of the Earth

1. भूपर्पटी (Crust)

2. मेंटल (Mantle)

Earth's Interior

Introduction

Earth is the only known planet in the solar system where life is possible. The Earth's exterior is directly visible, but its interior is not directly observable. Scientists have learned about Earth's internal structure through studies of seismic waves, gravity, magnetism, density, and volcanic activity.

The Earth's average radius is approximately 6371 kilometers, and its internal structure is divided into three main parts:

1. Crust

2. Mantle

3. Core

Sources for Studying the Earth's Interior

Information about the Earth's interior comes from two types of sources:

1. Direct Sources

Information from Mines

Deep Drilling

Lava and Rocks from Volcanic Eruptions

Limit: Humans have only been able to drill to a depth of approximately 12–13 km so far.

 2. Indirect Sources

These are the most important sources:

Seismic Waves

Gravity

Magnetic Field

Earth's Average Density

Study of Meteorites

Earth's Internal Structure

1. Crust

This is the Earth's outermost and thinnest layer.

Key Features

Thickness: Under continents: 30–70 km

Under oceans: 5–10 km

Average Density: 2.7–3.0 g/cm3

Major Elements:

Silica

Aluminum

For this reason, it is also called SIAL.

The oceanic region is known as SIMA due to its high silica and magnesium content.

 Importance

All continents and oceans are located on it.

Human life and the biosphere have evolved on it.

Moho Discontinuity

The boundary between the crust and the mantle is called the Moho Discontinuity.

It was discovered by Andrija Mohorovičić (1909).

2. Mantle

This is the thickest layer of the Earth.

Extent: 35 km to approximately 2900 km.

Major Elements

Silica

Magnesium

Iron

Characteristics

It is semi-solid.

Convection currents flow through it.

These convection currents are the main cause of plate tectonics.

 Parts of the Mantle

(a) Upper Mantle

Approximately 35–660 km

This rigid upper layer, along with the crust, forms the lithosphere.

(b) Asthenosphere

Approximately 100–350 km

Semi-liquid (Plastic) state

Tectonic plates float on this.

(c) Lower Mantle

660–2900 km

High density and high temperature.

Gutenberg Discontinuity

The boundary between the mantle and the core is called the Gutenberg Discontinuity.

It is located at a depth of approximately 2900 km.

3. Core

This is the innermost part of the Earth.

Extends

From 2900 km to 6371 km.

 Major Elements

Iron

Nickel

This is why it is called NIFE.

Parts of the Core

(a) Outer Core

Depth: 2900–5150 km

State: Liquid

Iron and nickel in molten state.

Special Importance

The Earth's magnetic field originates in the outer core.

(b) Inner Core

Depth: 5150–6371 km

State: Solid

Solid state due to extreme pressure.

 Earth's Internal Temperature

About 15°C at the surface

About 5000–6000°C at the core

The rate of temperature increase is called the geothermal gradient.

On average, the temperature increases by about 1°C for every 32–33 meters of depth (in the upper regions).

The Importance of Seismic Waves

Earthquake-generated waves are the most important tool for understanding the Earth's internal structure.

1. P-wave (Primary Wave)

The fastest

Pass through all three mediums—solid, liquid, and gas.

2. S-wave (Secondary Wave)

Traveles only in solid medium.

Does not pass through the outer core.

On this basis, it was discovered that the outer core is in a liquid state.

3. Surface Waves (L-Waves)

Traveles on the Earth's surface.

 are the most destructive.

Importance of the Earth's Interior

Explain volcanic eruptions.

Understanding the causes of earthquakes.

The basis of plate tectonics theory.

Discovery of mineral and energy resources.

Knowledge of the origin of the Earth's magnetic field.

Important Questions from an Exam Point of View

Short Answer Questions

1. What is the Earth's crust?

2. What is the Moho Discontinuity?

3. Differentiate between the sial and the sima.

4. Write the main characteristics of the mantle.

5. What is the NIFE?

6. What is the Gutenberg Discontinuity?

Long Answer Questions

1. Describe the Earth's internal structure in detail.

2. Explain the Earth's interior based on seismic waves.

3. Compare the crust, mantle, and core.

 Summary

The Earth's internal structure is divided into three major parts—the crust, mantle, and core. These layers differ in composition, density, temperature, and physical state. Studies of seismic waves reveal that the Earth's outer core is liquid, while the inner core is solid. Studying the Earth's interior is crucial to understanding not only geography but also geology, seismology, volcanology, and plate tectonics. This topic is crucial for the first semester BA (Major Geography) exam at Jai Narayan Vyas University.
