कक्षा: B.A.

(Origin of the Earth)

(Theories of the Origin of the Earth)

(Monistic / Single Star Theories)

(Modern Nebular Theory)

(Dualistic / Binary Star Theories)

(Summary Table)

(Nebular Hypothesis)

(Planetesimal Hypothesis)

(Tidal Theory)

(Modern Nebular Theory)

1. Introduction

The origin of the Earth is an important topic in geography and geology. Scientists believe that the Earth formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago. Various theories have been proposed over time to explain its origin. According to modern science, the Earth formed from the condensation of gas, dust, and cosmic matter.

Theories of the Earth's Origin

Theories of Earth's Origin are broadly divided into two categories.

1. Monistic / Single Star Theories

Meaning:

According to these theories, the Sun was the only primary object, and the planets (including Earth) originated from it.

Main Theories:

Kant-Laplace's Nebular Hypothesis

Modern Nebular Theory

Brief Explanation: According to these theories, initially there was a huge rotating cloud of gas and dust (a nebula). Due to gravity and rotation, its center became the Sun, and the remaining material formed planets. Earth is also the result of this process.

2. Dualistic / Binary Star Theories

Meaning:

According to these theories, a star other than the Sun also played a role in the formation of planets.

Main Theories:

Chamberlin and Moulton's Planetesimal Theory

Jeans and Jeffreys' Tidal Theory

Brief Explanation: According to these theories, a massive star passed near the Sun. Its gravity ejected matter from the Sun. This material cooled and transformed into smaller planetesimals, which later led to the formation of planets, including Earth.

 ---

Summary Table

Basic: Unistellar Theory, Binary Theory

Basic Idea: Planets originate solely from the Sun; the combined role of the Sun and another star.

Main Proponents: Kant, Laplace, Chamberlin, Moulton, Jeans, Jeffreys

Basic: Nebula (cloud of gas and dust) Ejection of matter from the Sun by the gravity of another star.

Current Status: Modern Modified Form: More Acceptable; Historical Significance, but not widely accepted today.

2. Major Theories of Earth's Origin

(a) Gaseous Hypothesis

Proponents: Immanuel Kant (1755) and Laplace (1796)

Main Idea

Initially, the entire solar system was a giant gaseous cloud (nebula).

This cloud rotated slowly.

Due to the rotation, rings separated from it.

The condensation of these rings led to the formation of planets.

Earth is one of these planets.

 Limitations

Cannot fully explain the angular momentum of planets.

---

(b) Planetesimal Hypothesis

Propounded by: Chamberlin and Moulton (1905)

Main Idea

A massive star passed near the Sun.

Due to its gravity, matter was ejected from the Sun.

This material accreted into small planetesimals.

Planetesimals combined to form planets.

Limitations

The likelihood of such massive stars approaching the Sun is considered extremely low.

---

(c) Tidal Theory

Propounded by: James Jeans and Jeffreys

Main Idea

A massive star passed near the Sun.

Matter from the Sun was ejected due to gravitational force.

This material cooled and transformed into planets.

 ---

3. Modern Nebular Theory

Propounded by: Otto Schmidt and Carl Weizsäcker

Key Points

A vast cloud of gas and dust surrounded the Sun.

Due to gravity, dust particles clumped together.

Gradually, planets formed.

The Earth was formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago.

4. Process of Earth's Formation

1. Cloud of gas and dust.

2. Condensation of particles by gravity.

3. Formation of small bodies (planetesimals).

4. Formation of planets.

5. The Earth was initially extremely hot.

6. Gradually, it cooled to form a solid crust.

7. Volcanic gases formed the atmosphere.

8. Condensation of water vapor formed the oceans.

5. Modern Scientific Opinion

Today, most scientists overwhelmingly accept the Modern Nebula Theory. According to this, the Sun and planets formed from a single gaseous and dusty cloud.
