Earthquake and Waves
(Epicenter)
(Isoseismal Lines)
(Seismic Waves)
(Richter Scale)
(Mercalli Scale)
(Seismic Belt)
(Tsunami)
(Seismic Waves)
(Surface Waves)
Meaning of earthquake
Earthquake is a sudden and intense shaking of the earth's surface, which is caused by the intense emission of energy within the earth. This energy is mainly released from plate tectonic movements, faults or volcanic activities.
When the pressure on the rocks in the inner surface of the earth increases and they break, then seismic waves are generated at that time. When these waves reach the surface of the earth, we feel the tremors.
Seismic introductory words and their meaning
1. Epicenter
The point on the surface of the earth, which is located exactly above the focus of the earthquake.
Here the tremors of the earthquake are felt first and most intensely.
2. Vibration center / origin place (Focus or Hypocenter)
The place inside the earth from where the earthquake waves originate.
It can be at a depth ranging from a few kilometers to hundreds of kilometers from the surface.
3. Isoseismal Lines
Lines drawn on the map that connect places with equal intensity.
4. Seismic Waves
Energy released during an earthquake, which spreads in the form of waves.
Main types: P-wave, S-wave and L-wave.
5. Richter Scale
Scale for measuring the magnitude of an earthquake.
It was developed by Charles F. Richter in 1935.
6. Mercalli Scale
Scale for measuring the intensity of an earthquake.
It has levels from I to XII.
7. Seismic Belt
Areas where earthquakes occur frequently.
For example - Himalayan region, "Ring of Fire" of the Pacific Ocean.
8. Tsunami
Waves generated by earthquakes under the sea, which cause a lot of destruction in coastal areas.
---
👉 In short:
Focus = point on the surface where the tremors are strongest.
Focus = actual place of origin inside the Earth.
Seismic Waves
The energy released during an earthquake spreads all around in the form of waves. These are called seismic waves. Mainly they are of three types –
1. P-waves (Primary Waves or Longitudinal Waves)
These move at the fastest speed.
They are first recorded on the seismograph.
Can travel in all three mediums – solid, liquid and gas.
The oscillation of particles occurs in the direction of the waves.
2. S-waves (Secondary Waves or Transverse Waves)
Arrive after P-waves.
Can travel only in solid medium, not in liquid.
Oscillation of particles is perpendicular to the direction of the wave.
They play a major role in the intensity of earthquake.
3. L-waves (Surface Waves)
They travel on the surface of the earth.
They are the most destructive because they shake buildings, roads and bridges.
They have the slowest speed, but the greatest impact.
👉 In short:
Earthquake = sudden shaking of the earth's surface.
Seismic waves = waves of energy released from an earthquake, which cause tremors and destruction on the surface.
