(Plate Tectonics)

(Volcanic Activity)

(Underground Explosions & Collapse)

(Human-Induced Earthquakes)

(Reservoir Induced Seismicity),

(Plate Tectonics)
(Faults)
(Volcanoes)
(Explosions & Collapse)
(Artificial Causes)

Earthquake is a sudden vibration on the surface of the earth, which is mainly caused by internal geological processes.

Causes of earthquake

1. Movement of geological plates (Plate Tectonics)

The outer layer of the Earth (Lithosphere) is divided into many rigid plates.

These plates float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere located below.

The collision, sliding, or separation of plates generates stress.

When the stress is suddenly released, an earthquake occurs.

Example:

Earthquakes occur due to the collision of the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate in the Himalayan region.

2. Movement of fault lines

The cracks on the surface of the Earth are called fault lines.

When rocks slip or break on these lines, energy is released in the form of seismic waves and an earthquake occurs.

Example:

Earthquakes occur frequently on the San Andreas Fault in California.

3. Volcanic Activity

The pressure of underground magma around active volcanoes breaks the rocks.

This pressure suddenly releases and causes earthquakes.

Example:

Vesuvius volcanic region of Italy.

4. Underground Explosions & Collapse

Excessive digging in mines, nuclear testing or sudden explosion of underground gas/mineral reserves.

Collapse of limestone caves or mines can also cause earthquake-like movements.

Example:

Artificial earthquakes were recorded during the nuclear tests of the Soviet Union and America.

 5. Human-Induced Earthquakes

Construction of large dams (Reservoir Induced Seismicity),

Excessive extraction of underground water/oil/gas,

Underground nuclear testing.

Example:

Koyna Dam area of Maharashtra, where earthquakes occurred repeatedly after the dam was built.

In short

The main causes of earthquakes are:

Plate Tectonics

Activity of fault lines (Faults)

Volcanic activity (Volcanoes)

Underground explosions and collapses (Explosions & Collapse)

Artificial Causes

भूकंप का विश्व वितरण (World Distribution of Earthquakes) असमान होता है।

(Mediterranean–Himalayan Belt)
