(Definitions of Volcano)

(Gilbert)

(Skinner & Porter)

(Oxford Dictionary of Geography)

👉 "A volcano is an opening in the Earth's crust through which molten rock, gases, and ash are ejected from the interior."

🌋 Meaning of Volcano

When magma, gas and other substances present inside the earth come out through cracks or holes on the surface, this process is called volcanic eruption. The place or hole from which this substance comes out is called volcano.

In short –

👉 Volcano is a natural hole on the surface of the earth from which magma, steam, ash, gases and other substances come out.

📖 Major Definitions of Volcano

1. Geographer Gilbert

👉 "Volcano is a hole from which the substances and gases present in the inner part of the earth come out on the surface."

2. Skinner & Porter

👉 "Volcano is a geographical structure which is formed when magma and gases reach the surface."

 3. Oxford Dictionary of Geography

👉 "A volcano is an opening in the Earth's crust through which molten rock, gases, and ash are ejected from the interior."

(Meaning - Volcano is a hole in the Earth's crust from which molten rock, gases, and ash come out.)

4. Indian Geography Definition

👉 "The place of internal eruptions of the Earth where magma, gas and other substances come out is called a volcano."

🔑 In short

Volcano = The hole/place on the surface of the Earth from which internal magma and gases come out.

Materials coming out with it → lava, gases, ash, steam.

It is the result of the Earth's internal energy and plate tectonic activities.

(Plate Tectonics)

---

(Convergent Boundaries)

---

(Divergent Boundaries)

---

(Hot Spots)

(Subduction Zones)

(Rift Zones)

🌋 Main causes of volcanoes

1. Plate Tectonics

The Earth's surface is divided into many rigid plates.

These plates constantly move - collide with each other, separate or sink under each other.

When the movement of plates creates cracks and pressure, magma comes out to the surface.

👉 Example: "Ring of Fire" region of the Pacific Ocean.

2. Convergent Boundaries

When an oceanic plate sinks under a continental plate (Subduction Zone), the heat and pressure melts the rocks.

This molten magma rises up and forms volcanoes.

👉 Example: Andes Mountains (South America).

3. Divergent Boundaries

Where plates move away from each other, cracks form.

Magma rises from these cracks and forms new landforms.

👉 Example: Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

4. Hot Spots

Some areas in the inner layers of the Earth are very hot, which are called "hot spots".

From these, magma reaches the surface directly and forms volcanoes.

Hot spots produce a series of volcanoes due to the movement of the plate.

👉 Example: Hawaiian Islands.

5. Earth's internal heat and pressure

Heat is constantly generated from the disintegration of radioactive elements inside the Earth.

This heat melts rocks and forms magma.

When the pressure increases too much, the magma erupts on the surface.

 🔑 In short

The main causes of volcanoes are –

Movement of plate tectonics

Subduction Zones

Rift Zones

Hot spots

Internal heat and pressure of the Earth
