(Airy’s Theory of Isostasy)

---

(Limitations)

Airy’s Theory of Isostasy

Airy’s isostasy theory was presented by Sir George Biddell Airy in 1855.

This theory is to explain the balance of different heights of land (such as mountains, plateaus, plains) found on the surface of the earth.

Main idea

According to Airy,

The earth’s crust maintains gravitational equilibrium despite being at different heights.

The density of the crust is almost the same, but its thickness varies.

In mountainous regions, the crust is thick and it is deeply embedded in the mantle in the form of “roots”.

In plains, the crust is thin and its roots are also shallow.

Main principle

The density of the crust is considered constant.

There are deep roots beneath high land masses, which balance their weight.

In low altitude regions, the crust is thin and the roots are short.

Example

The thickness of the crust beneath the Himalayas is very high, so there are deep roots in the mantle.

The crust is thin in the Gangetic plains, so the roots are shallow there.

Understanding through a diagram

Suppose a piece of wood is placed in water - the thick piece sinks more in water and the thin piece sinks less.

Similarly, mountains sink more in the "mantle" and plains less.

Limitations

It is assumed that the density of the crust is the same everywhere, whereas in reality it may vary.

This theory does not fully explain the rigidity and plasticity of the mantle.
