(Symmetrical Fold)
(Asymmetrical Fold)
(Overturned Fold)
(Recumbent Fold)
(Fan Fold)
---
(C) विशेष प्रकार
Chevron Fold –
Isoclinal Fold –
---

Earth-movement folds and their types
1. Introduction
Earth-movement folding means the folding of rock layers on the surface of the earth due to compressional force. This process is mainly caused by endogenic forces, especially plate tectonics.
When horizontal pressure is applied on the earth's crust, hard rocks may develop faults, but flexible layers withstand the pressure and bend - this folding is called folding.
2. Major parts of folds
Anticline – The upper raised part of the fold
Syncline – The lower sunken part of the fold
Axial plane – The imaginary plane that divides the fold into two equal parts
Axis line – The line located at the top of the fold
3. Reasons for the formation of folds
Collision of plates (convergent plate boundary)
Intense pressure and high temperature
Flexibility of sedimentary rocks
4. Types of folds
(A) Based on shape
Symmetrical Fold
The layers on both sides have the same inclination towards the axial plane.
Asymmetrical Fold
The layers on both sides have different inclinations.
Overturned Fold
When the pressure is high, the layer on one side climbs over the other side.
Recumbent Fold
Fold lying in almost horizontal position.
Fan Fold
Folds appear to be spread out like a fan.
(B) On the basis of origin
Flexure fold – Flexible folds bend without breaking.
Fracture fold – Cracks in rocks along with bending.
(C) Special types
Chevron Fold – Fold resembling a pointed angle.
Monocline – Simple fold with inclination on one side.
Isoclinal Fold – Equal inclination and same direction on both sides.
