(Pratt's Theory of Isostasy )

(Pratt’s Uniform Depth Hypothesis – 1855):

(Airy)

Pratt's Theory of Isostasy

🔶 Introduction:

Isostasy is the concept of balance of layers of different density and thickness under various mountains, plateaus and oceans located on the surface of the earth. Many theories were given to explain this balance, one of the important theories is of John Henry Pratt.

🔷 Pratt's Uniform Depth Hypothesis - 1855:

Main assumption: According to Pratt, the thickness of the earth's crust is almost the same, but there is a difference in its density. This difference in density causes the difference in height at different places.

 🧠 Key points:

Difference in density:

Rocks in high mountains have less density while rocks below the sea level have more density.

Extension to a uniform depth:

The thickness of the earth's crust is considered to be approximately the same, but its density varies from place to place so that the gravitational force remains in balance.

Gravitational balance:

Pratt proved that if the gravitational force is the same at two places, it is not necessary that their height is the same - there is a difference in density.

📌 Example:

The density of rocks is less in high mountain areas like the Himalayas.

The density is higher in low areas like the ocean.

In this way, lighter layers of less density rise up and heavier layers of more density sink down, which maintains the balance of the earth.

🔚 Conclusion:

Pratt's total state theory is based on the fact that the higher regions of the earth are made up of lighter rocks, while the lower regions are made up of heavier rocks. This theory contributed significantly in understanding the concept of isostasy.
