(Theory of Slope Development)

1. Wachsende Reliefe (Growing Relief)

2. Gleichförmige Reliefe (Uniform Relief)

3. Abtragende Reliefe (Waning Relief)

(Penck)

(Slope adjustment)

Following Davis, Walter Penck (W. Penck, 1924, German geographer) presented a new approach to landform development, called Penck's Geographical Cycle of Erosion.

Davis's theory was time-based (young → mature → old), while Penck's model was based on simultaneous erosion and uplift.

Penck's Approach

The development of landforms depends not only on time, but primarily on

the rate of uplift

the rate of erosion.

The development of landforms is a continuous process, not a cycle divided into fixed stages.

The balance between uplift (tectonic forces) and erosion (exogenic forces) controls topography.

Key Concepts

1. Relationship between Uplift and Erosion

If the rate of uplift > the rate of erosion → the land level rises, steep slopes form, and deep valleys develop.

If the rate of uplift = the rate of erosion → the land remains in equilibrium, and the slope remains constant.

If the rate of uplift < the rate of erosion → the land continues to subside, and flat plains form.

2. Theory of Slope Development

Penk explained the development of slopes in three ways:

Growing Relief

When the rate of uplift is high,

the slope becomes steeper, valleys deepen, and young landforms are formed.

Uniform Relief

When uplift and erosion are equal,

the slope remains constant.

 Waning Relief

When the rate of uplift is slow and erosion is high.

The slope gradually decreases, the landform becomes low and flat.

Differences between Davis and Penck

Points: Davis, Penck, Base, Time (youth → mature → old), Rate of uplift and erosion, Process: Cyclic and sequential, Continuous and dynamic, Uplift occurs initially, then stops, Runs alongside erosion, Slope development, Slope retreat, Slope adjustment, Final stage: Peneplain, Depends on the balance of uplift and erosion

Characteristics of the Theory

It is more realistic and dynamic than Davis's.

It incorporates the continuity of tectonic activity.

The explanation of slope development is more scientific.

Criticisms

This theory is considered more complex and difficult.

The rate of uplift and erosion is difficult to measure practically.

It fails to fully explain many landforms.

Conclusion

Penck's geological erosion cycle offers a more realistic and dynamic approach than Davis's classical theory.

It has opened a new direction in understanding geomorphology, especially in the study of slope development and the relationship between uplift and erosion.
