(Atmosphere: Composition and Structure )
(Introduction)
(Composition of the Atmosphere)

---
(Structure of the Atmosphere)
(Troposphere)
---
(Stratosphere)
---
(Mesosphere)
---
(Thermosphere)
---
(Exosphere)
(Importance of the Atmosphere)
---
(Conclusion)
Atmosphere: Composition and Structure
🌍 1. Introduction
A layer of gases surrounds the Earth called the atmosphere.
This layer protects the Earth from the sun's harmful rays, regulates temperature, and provides gases essential for life.
The atmosphere extends to an altitude of approximately 10,000 kilometers above Earth's surface, but most of it is confined within 30 kilometers of Earth's surface.
🌫️ 2. Composition of the Atmosphere
The atmosphere is composed of various gases, water vapor, dust particles, and particulate matter.
🧪 Major Gases in the Atmosphere
Name of Gas Percentage (%) Importance
Nitrogen 78.08% Part of the nitrogen cycle, essential for plant growth.
Oxygen (20.95%): A gas essential for respiration and combustion.
Argon (0.93%): An inert gas, chemically unchangeable.
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) (0.04%): Essential for photosynthesis, contributing to the greenhouse effect.
Neon, helium, methane, krypton, hydrogen, etc., in very small quantities, play a role in atmospheric stability and radiation balance.
---
💧 (a) Water Vapor
Water vapor constitutes 0% to 4% of the atmosphere.
It plays an important role in processes such as evaporation and rainfall.
It regulates temperature and influences the greenhouse effect.
---
🌪️ (b) Dust Particles
Soil, pollen, ash, smoke, sea salts, etc. float in the atmosphere.
These help in the formation of rain and clouds.
---
🏔️ 3. Structure of the Atmosphere
The atmosphere is divided into five main layers based on temperature—
---
🌤 (1) Troposphere
Altitude: About 8 km at the poles, about 18 km at the equator.
This is the lowest and most important layer of the atmosphere.
Key Features:
All weather phenomena (rain, clouds, storms, and hurricanes) occur in this layer.
The temperature decreases with increasing altitude (about 6.5°C per km).
The upper limit of this layer is called the tropopause.
---
☀️ (2) Stratosphere
Altitude: Approximately 18 km to 50 km.
Characteristics:
The temperature here remains nearly constant, then gradually increases.
This layer contains the ozone layer, which absorbs the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays.
There are no weather events in this layer, so it is suitable for airplanes.
The upper limit is called the stratopause.
---
🔥 (3) Mesosphere
Altitude: Approximately 50 km to 80 km.
Characteristics:
The temperature here decreases with increasing altitude.
This is the coldest layer of the atmosphere (temperatures down to approximately -90°C).
Meteors burn up in this layer.
The upper boundary is called the mesopause.
---
⚡ (4) Thermosphere
Altitude: Approximately 80 km to 400 km.
Characteristics:
Temperature increases rapidly with altitude.
The sun's ultraviolet rays ionize air molecules here.
For this reason, it is also called the ionosphere.
Radio waves are reflected from this layer and transmitted far.
---
☄️ (5) Exosphere
Altitude: Above approximately 400 km (10,000 km or more).
Characteristics:
This is the outermost layer of the atmosphere.
Air molecules are extremely sparse (very low density) here.
Mainly hydrogen and helium gases are found.
From here, the atmosphere gradually dissipates into space.
---
🌈 4. Importance of the Atmosphere
1. Provides gases essential for life – oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc.
2. Protects from the sun's harmful rays – especially through the ozone layer.
3. Regulates temperature – maintains the Earth at a habitable temperature through the greenhouse effect.
4. Enables weather events – rain, wind, clouds, etc.
5. Enables sound and radio wave transmission.
---
🧭 5. Conclusion
The atmosphere acts as a protective shield for the Earth. Its various layers are essential for life, weather, and communication.
Human pollution, deforestation, and greenhouse gas emissions are disrupting the atmospheric balance, leading to problems like climate change and global warming.
Therefore, we must take steps to protect the atmosphere, such as using clean energy, planting trees, and controlling pollution.
