(Jeans and Jeffreys Tidal Hypothesis)

(Main Points) :

(Gravitational Pull)

(Filament of Gas)

(Criticism)

Jeans and Jeffreys Tidal Hypothesis

This hypothesis is an important scientific hypothesis given to explain the formation of the universe (especially the origin of the solar system). It was proposed by Sir James Jeans and Harold Jeffreys in 1919.

🌍 Main Points:

Basis of the theory

Jeans and Jeffreys proposed that our solar system originated from a tidal event.

Collision between the Sun and a giant star (gas giant)

They believed that the Sun was a single star. One day a very giant star passed very close to the Sun.

Gravitational Pull

Due to the gravitational attraction of that giant star, the outer gaseous layers of the Sun were pulled and a stream of matter came out of it.

 Filament of Gas

This extruded gaseous matter spread in space and gradually condensed to form planets, satellites, comets etc.

🌌 Origin of Solar System according to this hypothesis

Gas came out from the Sun's gravitational tide (tidal bulge)

That gas accumulated at various places in space

After cooling down, it turned into planets and other celestial bodies

🔍 Problems / Criticism

The probability of this event is extremely low – it is very rare for such a big star to come so close to the Sun.

Condensation of gaseous stream is difficult – Scientists believe that it was practically not possible for that gas to condense into planets.

This hypothesis is considered weak in front of the Modern Nebular Hypothesis.

 ✅ Conclusion:

The tidal hypothesis of Jeans and Jeffrey was an early attempt to explain the origin of the solar system which became very popular in its time, but has been virtually disproved by modern scientific facts and theories.
