By Dr Naveen Kumar Pareek

(Natural Satellite)

(Artificial Satellite)

Low Earth Orbit (LEO)

Medium Earth Orbit (MEO)

Geostationary Orbit

Satellites and Their Significance

1. Introduction

Modern scientific techniques are of particular importance in physical geography for studying the Earth, its atmosphere, oceans, landforms, and natural processes. Satellites are one such modern technology that has made Earth studies more scientific, comprehensive, and accurate.

Artificial satellites are extremely useful in obtaining information from the Earth's surface to the upper layers of the atmosphere. Weather forecasting, cyclone monitoring, agriculture, water resources, forests, land use, disaster management, and environmental change are studied based on the images and data obtained by satellites.

2. Meaning of Satellite

A satellite is a celestial or artificial object that orbits a larger celestial body due to its gravitational force.

There are mainly two types of satellites:

1. Natural Satellite

2. Artificial Satellite

Natural Satellite

Satellites that are formed by nature are called natural satellites. The Moon is Earth's natural satellite.

 Artificial Satellites

Satellites built by humans and placed in space using rockets are called artificial satellites.

3. What is an artificial satellite?

An artificial satellite is a man-made spacecraft that is placed in a fixed orbit around the Earth or another celestial body.

They are equipped with various instruments, such as:

Camera

Sensors

Radar

Communication equipment

Weather monitoring equipment

Spectrometers

GPS equipment

These instruments provide a variety of data about the Earth and its environment.

4. How does a satellite work?

An artificial satellite is launched into space by a rocket or launch vehicle. After reaching the appropriate altitude and velocity, it continues to orbit in its designated orbit due to the Earth's gravitational force.

 General working process

Earth → Rocket → Satellite launch → Designated orbit → Earth observation → Data collection → Information to Earth station → Analysis → Use

In this way, the satellite does not land on Earth and collect information, but rather observes the Earth from a distance.

5. Main orbits of satellites

Satellites are placed in different orbits depending on their altitude and purpose.

(a) Low Earth Orbit (LEO)

Relatively close to the Earth's surface.

Generally useful for Earth observation and scientific research.

High-quality Earth images can be obtained.

Very important for remote sensing.

(b) Medium Earth Orbit (MEO)

Located at a higher altitude than LEO.

Used in navigation and communication systems.

This type of orbit is important in systems like GPS.

(c) Geostationary Orbit

This is an orbit located at an altitude of approximately 35,786 km above the Earth's equatorial region.

In this orbit, the satellite orbits at the same angular speed as the Earth's rotation, so when viewed from Earth, it appears stationary over the same position.

 Main Uses:

Weather Monitoring
